Why Germany?

Why Germany or, more precisely, Why German? This is a logical question - it is also usually the question that is asked of me by everyone who I tell that I am studying German. The honest answer is not a simple one. I have been fascinated by German culture and the language from around the time I started High School. It was something I had researched in 8th grade - politically, as well as the main reason that I took AP European History in my Sophomore Year. This fascination has even brought me to the place I am today - having just finished my fifth year overall - and first in college - studying German.

Ja, das mag ich! Und wann Mann mögen etwas, dann das mussen Sie studieren!

So when people ask ´Why German?,´ then that's the answer that I give them. It's my passion. It´s one of the things I enjoy most. I am even able to work with German speaking customers, should the need arise at work!

It's that passion that led me to want to be a German Teacher. I spend my time at work helping customers and teaching them how to use some of the latest technology - and it's helping to develop my interpersonal skills as well as leadership skills! There is, however another reason that pushed me into that career plan. I have, throughout my career in German, had fantastic instructors who were passionate about what they do - that passion has also been instilled in me - and it is because of this that I strive everyday to at least do something in German (also so I don´t get rusty over summer break!)

Studying in Germany is something that I think will be very good for me - it will allow me to experience the culture. That experience is just not replaceable by classroom instruction, especially since we are only getting a glimpse of it from the videos and pictures that we see in class.

I have also always wanted to go to Germany after being told (time and time again) about my parents´ experience living in Frankfort for 3 years. I know that´s not where we´ll be, but it´ll still be valuable and fascinating! I hope that in some free time that we have that I can visit my friend Julia in Hamburg. She has been so psyched since she found out I was going to be going to Germany for this D-Term trip!

I anticipate learning and experiencing alot more about the German culture and experience of just being there. This will be my first trip abroad and I cannot wait!

One of my favorite things we did in German this year was to make Wiki-seite for various German states and cities as part of our Geography unit - it was super interesting. The webpage for that is https://dokuwiki.noctrl.edu/doku.php?id=ger:203:2013:spr:home. They are very interesting and have great information but are all in German.

Lastly, if anyone wants a fun way to learn a little German outside of school (and for free) (and it's actually fun!) I suggest the app Duolingo - it is available on the web, on iPhone, and on Android. It's a great way to learn some pertinent vocab and grammar and it's in the style of a game - I started playing this weekend and am on level 6!
